In Blessed Memory of Paula Klein
These images were born on the ancestral homelands of the Duwamish and Coast Salish peoples, in Seattle, Washington. Featuring Paula Klein (1924-2022) and her granddaughter Einav Bloom. Paula Klein, of blessed memory, was amongst the last generation of Holocaust Survivors and a former resident of Seattle. When Paula arrived in Seattle from Shanghai, she lived on Broadway street in Capital Hill, quickly learned English and began working as a hairdresser in the Smith Tower on Yesler Avenue. She raised two daughters, along with their grandchildren and was the matriarch for her family. Later in life, she worked as a caretaker for infants.
While visiting Paula with her granddaughter, Einav, I offered to take Paula's portrait. Such greatly impacted by Paula's legacy, kinship, resilience and open heart- I found it necessary to also share her portrait here. To learn about Paula's experience escaping Berlin in Nazi Germany and her life in Shanghai: Watch her testimony below, courtesy of the Holocaust Center for Humanity.
